For the boys: Gabriel Gontijo

24/05/16

In this section I invite men I admire to share their grooming routine, tips and beauty secrets.

Today’s guest is Gabriel Gontijo, hair chameleon and Brazilian social media star. He works on advertising and marketing for Brazilian fashion brand Iorane and can be found online on YouTube (/papalizerkid) and as @gabriel_gontijo on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter ”.

Introduction made, I leave you with his tips! Hope you like it.

“I’m not the kind of guy with lots of beauty rituals or discipline when it comes to skincare. My approach to skincare is basically basic, if you know what I mean.

I wash my face in the shower with La Roche-Posay Effaclar, and this is my daily skincare. Once in a while I go to my dermatologist for a facial but, as I mentioned above, I make no commitments, so I only go when I look in the mirror and think “wow! I need to do something about this”. I always go to the same dermatologist, Dr. Francisco Duarte, in Belo Horizonte, my hometown in Brazil.

I know it is extremely important and essential to wear a sunscreen on your face and hands, especially since I work in front of the computer and the light in the office is the kind that damages our skin, but I am still working on achieving this goal.

When I go out I wear a compact foundation, MAC Pro Longwear in NW20, just to avoid a “bare” face… But that’s all I do.

I find it funny cause here and there I have followers commenting my photos like “nice skin!”, “OMG, this is the example of a perfect skin!”, “I wanted to have a skin like yours!!”. And then I’m like “excuse me?”. My skin is oily and I don’t consider it so great to the point of having people commenting on it, it might be the Instagram’s filters fault.

Now, my hair: It’s what I change the most, I am always changing! I’ve had it long, short, curly, straight, pink, blond, shaved, etc. I also have no secret/magical/exclusive rituals for it. I wash it twice a day – I just cannot take a shower without washing my hair, my mom is always saying I’ll go bald – with Pantene, whatever line I can find in the drugstore, usually the Moisture Renewal or the Smooth & Sleek, but I don’t follow a rule, I just don’t like 2-in-1 shampoos.

Once in a while, I get a Brazilian keratin hair treatment. My hair is naturally curly, but the curls only show when it is a bit longer. A keratin treatment is a straightening treatment, right?! Besides straightening my hair, the treatment makes it shiny and moisturises it, so whenever I feel it a bit drier or when it looks a bit “spikier” I do it. During the first few weeks after the treatment, I wash my hair with a sulfate free shampoo by Haskell (a Brazilian brand) that I was recommended at a drugstore once – because it’s sulfate free, the treatment lasts longer.

Recently, I decided to throw myself into colours. I had my hair coloured pink, then I went platinum, I had 9 different hair colours in 42 days! With all this chemistry overload, my hair suffered a bit, so I had to colour it black (to try to match my natural colour) in order to get rid of the coloured ends little by little. I shaved my head around three times… I always get my hair cut by Fernanda Braga in Belo Horizonte she was responsible for colouring my hair pink. In São Paulo I see Renan Gallardo. The keratin treatment I get in Belo Horizonte as well, with Cris from the salon Tif’s.

For the lips: I absolutely love to apply Carmex until there is some excess on the sides and my moustache gets dirty. I can’t help it, that freshness is delicious. My lips are naturally plump and get very very dry, especially when it’s cold. Besides Carmex I also like to wear the EOS lip balms, I love their round shape.”
